Tax Filing FAQ
Answers to the questions we hear most, organized in the order they come up while we prepare your return.
getting started with tax preparation
-
Complete the tax organizer in your portal and upload every document it requests. Don't submit the organizer until everything is uploaded — we start working on your return as documents arrive, so submitting early actually slows things down.
-
Your retainer and signed tax agreement is due prior to beginning tax services. As mentioned in your tax proposal your retainer nonrefundable and will be credited towards your final invoice.
-
Once we have both pieces — your uploaded tax documents and your completed tax organizer your turnaround time begins. We ask that you give us ten business days for turnaround however, most people receive their final tax documents earlier. Missing either one pauses the clock.
-
If it's been more than six months since your last tax consultation, get on the calendar. It's a 15-minute call to walk through any questions before we begin.
If you need an extension
-
It moves your filing deadline to October 15 for individual 1040 and corporate 1120 filers, or September 15 for S-corp 1120s and partnership 1065s.
-
No. An extension only extends the time you have to file — not the time you have to pay. Any remaining balance is still due on the original date, and unpaid balances can accrue penalties and interest, so pay as much as you can as soon as you can.
while we prepare your return
-
No action needed. This step is just an update; we'll reach out directly if we need anything from you.
-
We'll contact you through the portal and/or by email. If your organizer wasn't filled out completely, we'll send it back to you — incomplete organizers are one of the most common causes of a longer turnaround. Please take your time to read through the organizer.
-
We'll upload it to your portal and email you a link to review it.
if we’re missing something
-
While preparing your return, we found we still need specific items from you — they're listed directly in that email, chat or request.
-
Yes — your turnaround time begins once everything is in, so the sooner you send the missing items, the sooner your return moves forward.
